Every three years, over 20,000 people come to the Urbana conference to learn about God's purposes in the world. TeachOverseas' main purpose at Urbana is to encourage people about their hopes and dreams for overseas service.
This year's conference theme is: "You Have a Calling." Indeed, 90% of people who took an Urbana QuickPoll believe that all Christians have a calling to go overseas unless they are called to "stay."
However, in reality, we know that a very small percentage of Christians (even among Urbana attendees) actually make it overseas. It is one thing to feel a general sense of calling, but it is quite another to discern a specific calling and follow up on it.
At TeachOverseas we interview hundreds of candidates who are in the process of discerning their calling. Based on 25 years of experience, we would like to offer some suggestions to help guide you along the way:
1. Search the Scriptures. From Genesis to Revelation, God's word is full of his heart for the nations. As you read the Bible, pay special attention to the theme of God's desire for all the peoples of the world to know him. Knowing what Scripture says about overseas work is an important foundation. The Word of God will be faithful to direct you in your convictions about cross-cultural service.
2. Explore your interests and giftings. Are there any particular regions of the world that stand out to you? Would you like to provide some kind of practical service? What kinds of things come naturally to you? What age group are you most comfortable interacting with? You will thrive in an environment that engages your passion and talents. Learn about your options on this website and others to see what kind of ministry "fits" you best.
3. Pray! Ask God for discernment throughout this process. God knows where you can make a strategic impact. He knows which ministry and organization will be the best fit. He knows the right time for you to go or stay. He does not want to hide this information from you — seek Him persistently, with all of your heart, and you will find!
4. Ask the local community of believers for their input. Often times our friends, family and church leaders can see things that we don't necessarily see for ourselves. This may involve our strengths, as well as areas that need growth. Make a point to talk to your church leaders about your interest in overseas service. You will need their support in the long-run and it is good to get their feedback early on.
5. Take a step of faith. We would love to talk with you about where you feel God is leading you. Feel free to contact us at 1-800-895-7955 and talk with one of our friendly mobilizers about opportunities to teach conversational English and other subjects in ten different countries. We would be happy to hear about your interest in overseas service and to help you move forward in your journey.
Just as the Urbana conference reminds us, "you have a calling!" May God bless you as you seek discernment for his direction in your life.
